Irritants to Your Defense System
Science is only beginning to understand how synthetic chemicals affect our health and the health of our planet. We are learning that even minute amounts of some, may cause serious harm. Many of the thousands of synthetic chemicals used in consumer products have never been required to go through safety testing.
Natural versus Synthetic
• Synthetic chemicals are often used to replace healing essential oils.
• It seems that just about everything is being replaced by imitations, but these imitations are proving harmful and even toxic to the human body.

Not So Sexy –
Hidden Chemicals in Perfume and Cologne
FRAGRANCE (PARFUM)
• Immune system toxicant
• Possible neurotoxin (chemicals that are toxic to the brain)
• Can contain between 10 and 300 different chemicals,
many of which have never been tested for safety.
BENZYL ACETATE
• A solvent hidden within “fragrance”
• Linked to pancreatic cancer
• Easily absorbs into skin causing quick systemic effects
• Possible gastrointestinal, liver, and respiratory toxicant; possible neurotoxin
PHTHALATES
• Hidden within “fragrance”
• May cause sperm damage in men
• January 2007 found the phthalates DEP and DEHP (which is banned in Europe) in each of eight popular perfumes tested.
• Linked to hormone disruption, which can affect development and fertility

ALUMINUM ZIRCONIUM and OTHER ALUMINUM COMPOUNDS
• Controls odor and slows down the production of sweat
• Linked to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease
• May be linked to breast cancer
• Probable neurotoxin; possible nervous system,
respiratory, and developmental toxin
MINERAL OIL
• Human immune and respiratory toxicant
• Skin, eyes and/or lung irritant
• Organ system toxicity (cardiovascular, stomach, digestive tract, and respiratory system)
• Health problems manifest as allergies

Triclosan
• Anti-bacterial agent, deodorant, preservative
• Reduces and controls bacterial contamination on the hands and on treated products
• Probable endocrine disrupter and cancer causing
• Easily bio-accumulates to dangerous levels
• Developmental and reproductive toxicity
• Irritation to ski, eyes or lungs
Coal Tar
• Controls itching and eczema
• Softens and promotes the dissolution of hard, scaly, rough skin
• Can be found in shampoo soaps and hair dyes
